Nintendo Chief Passes Away at 55 Due to Cancer

Satoru Iwata, who has been serving as the Chief Executive Officer and president of Nintendo Co Ltd for over a decade passed away on 11th July at the age of 55 due to cancer. The videogame company announced on Sunday night: “Nintendo Co., Ltd. deeply regrets to announce that President Satoru Iwata passed away on July 11, 2015 due to a bile duct growth”.


Satoru Iwata was appointed as the CEO of Nintendo back in 2002, replacing Hiroshi Yamauchi, and became the fourth president in Nintendo’s 125 year history. Iwata’s relation with Nintendo started way before this, when he started working at HAL laboratory which is a video game developer closely associated with Nintendo.

Satoru Iwata’s health has suffered badly in over the past 2 years. He underwent a surgery in June 2014 for the removal of a growth on his bile duct. In a statement to the shareholders after the surgery, Iwata said that his doctors were confident that they had found the growth early and he had no symptoms of any growth now. Iwata resumed his office back in October 2014. Despite his signs of recovery, he missed this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo which in one of the most important video game conferences.

Soturu Iwata was admired by the entire gaming industry for his work on some of the Nintendo’s most popular games and devices since he joined the company in 2000. Recently he took a bold step of taking Nintendo to the rapidly growing mobile gaming sector.

Iwata was known as a CEO with the heart of a gamer. When the gaming population started declining in the late 90s, Iwata knew that he needed to launch products that  appealed  to non-gamers as much as gamers. With this in mind, he launched the Nintendo DS in 2004 which became the world’s bestselling hand-held videogame console. Two years after this, the company launched a one of a kind console called the Wii. It gained popularity among new as well as hardcore gamers. It became famous due to its unique controller design that revolutionized motion gaming.

Satoru Iwata will always be remembered by the gaming enthusiasts all over the world. He is no less than a legend in gaming industry. May his soul rest in eternal peace!
