Asus Chromebook Flip (C100) – Review & Giveaway

Is Asus the first to get the 2 in 1 convertible form factor right with the Asus Chromebook Flip? Read on to find out, and enter our giveaway.

The Good:

  1.  ChromeOS
  2.  Light enough to actually use like a tablet (unlike most devices in this form factor.)
  3.  Excellent Battery life of around 9 hours means you can put in a full workday without recharging.
  4.  Priced at < $250 this is the budget laptop to beat.

The Bad:

  1.  ChromeOS
  2.  No back-lit keyboard
  3.  No stylus
  4.  No standard charging port.

The Skinny:

The device is light enough to hold and use as a tablet, yet still carries all of the functionality of a laptop.  While some may find the 10.1 inch screen a bit small for a laptop, I find it quite usable given the devices 1280×800 resolution. Personally, I still wish the device included a backlight and a stylus, but that probably would up the price above the normal range of a Chromebook. The device is made of brushed medal, and has a very similar feel to the smallest Macbook Air. Asus really pegged the 2 in 1 form factor with the Chromebook Flip.

Speed and simplicity is the creed of ChromeOS, and the Flip executes both beautifully. Faster than a much more expensive computer running Windows, and simple enough for your parents to figure out. As with all Chromebooks, if you are used to running Windows, Mac, or Linux, you may need to find some new online apps to replace the offline versions you’ve been using. While some Web Developers and Designers may struggle to fully replace a classic OS, over 90% of users will be able to play nicely with the ChromeOS ecosystem.

Overall, I think the Asus Chromebook Flip is a great fit for most any user, and I would score it 90% awesome. I have a hard time giving it up, but it’s hard for a Web Developer to function within the friendly confines of ChromeOS.

  1. Nice review! I have been thinking about getting a Asus Chromebook and this one looks really nice. I like that it is small so you can take it easily wherever you may be going.

  2. the Asus Chromebook Flip would be the perfect fit for me, I have never owned a notebook and this is exactly what I need

  3. LOVE the battery life, like the size and stats, but I agree about the back-lit keyboard, that would have been a great addition.

  4. I would LOVE to win this. I do have a laptop right now, it’s getting old.. AND I have a lot of grandkids over who BEG me to let them use my computer and I am loathe to. I could let them play on this one rather than my main one.

  5. I love Asus products and I also love that it’s a chromebook. They are so compact and lightweight that they are easy to take wherever you go. What a great giveaway.

  6. I would love to win the Asus Chromebook. It would be prefect for me to take to my study groups and college classes.

  7. I’ve been researching laptops for the past week! Trying to decide which one to get… the specs on this budget -friendly laptop are pretty impressive. Count me into the drawing too please. Maybe I’ll get luck and wont have to purchase one!

  8. My wife’s old laptop literally fell apart for the last time the other day (Toshiba used to mount the screen hinges in questionable places). This would make a great replacement. I love how you put “Chrome OS” in the positive AND the negative columns.

  9. My husband teaches online and has been wanting a fast, sleek chromebook so that he can take it wherever he goes. This looks perfect!

  10. I would love to win this because it would be perfect for school. Great review! I start the university this Fall & might need to get something like this!

  11. I have an older ASUS laptop that I use at home. The review was great and has me considering a two in one flip Chromebook for travel and waiting for treatments. Thanks for the great giveaway. Good luck everyone

  12. This looks like a very nice laptop. I love that it flips and can be used like a tablet. I also would like the backlight, now that you have mentioned it, but as I do not have one on my desktop keyboard I probably wouldn’t miss it very much. I do like that it is lightweight and has a 9 hour battery life. This would be very handy to carry with me as I work on my genealogy. I could input the info right on the laptop instead of having to make notes and go home and enter on my PC. Overall, I think this would be a great tool.

  13. Our current ASUS is on its way out. Maybe it just needs to be reformatted, I haven’t yet tried, but it’s virtually useless at this point. It’s laggy and prone to errors. It’s also something like 4 or 5 years old. Could really use an upgrade!

  14. Great review. Always wanted a Chromebook. This one would be perfect to take anywhere. Love the long battery life & and that it is very lightweight. All that power packed in a small package.

  15. This looks like just the ticket for taking my work with me, my books, games, so very portable. The 9 hour Battery life is also a HUGE plus so I don’t have to carry my charger and figure out where I’m going to plug it in at! I learned to use a computer on an ASUS . I’m 62 and my daughter insisted I learn to use it..Thank God I did! I work for our Church Non-Profit Food Pantry Ministry and would be lost without my laptop. I really need something smaller to take along and this fits the bill. I’ve always trusted ASUS ! Thank-you so much!

  16. This would be so great to have for my daughter for school for next year. It would also be great for while she is in school for me to have for my business.

  17. This is a cool notebook, the fact that it is lightweight and flips has me sold. Don’t have any problems with the size of the screen, it makes it very portable and better than carrying something that is close to 10 pounds. This would be perfect for my college classes and the 9 hour battery life is something that I would need.

  18. I’d really love to win this. I’ve been eyeing this particular Chromebook up for school due to its great ergonomics. The battery life is great and Chrome OS is perfect for using Google Docs.

  19. I actually just picked up a refurbished XPS 13. Before that though, I had been heavily considering a Chromebook. Hard to find one that you can swap both memory and the ssd m though. Glad to see the Chromebook continues to evolve. Battery life seems to be the single biggest win.

  20. I am hooked on Chromebooks now because they are fast and easy to use, I would really love to have one of these!

  21. It would be so awesome to have a laptop! I recently lost my iPod touch at the beach, and that was the only tech I had. I’m entering lots of giveaways on my mom’s phone to try and possibly win something as cool as this, so I hope to be lucky! Also a big Asus fan from what I’ve seen from youtube reviews

  22. I absolutely LOVE the specs on this Asus Chromebook Flip c100!! This laptop looks super light and easy to move around. I’d feel wonderful to win such a nice looking laptop!! Thanks for the chance! 🙂

  23. Thank you for the review. Love the perks and I agree the screen size is not that small. The no light up of the keyboard isn’t too bad of a problem. I have never had a keyboard that lit up so I guess I don’t see that as a con!

  24. My family would love to have this – the tablet/computer option is very coo. Thanks for the chance to win this awesome laptop.

  25. I would love to win this Chrombook. My compute is on loan right now so this Chrombook would be ideal for me.

  26. I would love this Chromebook so I can dump my old home pc with is running on Windows XP and on its last legs.

  27. My Laptop died about a month ago, and we’ve all been using one computer.. this would be awesome! Thanks for the great giveaway!

  28. Thanks so much for your review of the Asus Chromebook! This would be just what I need for work! Small enough to travel home with me at night too! =)

Thanks so much for the chance to win it!

  29. I only have a desktop and I soooo need this Chromebook. It has all the bells and whistles that would make me want to jump with joy of owning an ASUS Chromebook!

  30. I think this would be a great tablet/notebook for kids to do homework on. My son has a high school web coding class and he’s having to work on our MS Surface 2. I thought that would be a great tablet for the kids, but the MS OS is so restrictive as to apps and configuring your workspace and software setups. The browser is a PITA. Thanks for this great review and the giveaway; Fingers crossed!

  31. Nice Chromebook. Great price nice features. Would seriously look at getting one. I especially like the tablet feature.

  32. I love that the Asus Chromebook flip is light enough to actually use like a tablet. My present laptop is old and bulky.

  33. I’d love to be able to win this and give it to my mother for Mother’s Day. She’s been wanting a tablet.
