Ubuntu 15.10 Screen Tearing – Intel Drivers – Kodi

On a fresh install of Ubuntu Gnome 15.10 I was having issues with screen tearing when trying to watch live TV in Kodi. Here’s how you can remedy this issue if you are using Intel HD graphics:

*Note that users have reported problems doing this with the “Unity” Desktop Environment*

Open up your terminal and run the following 3 commands:

[bash]sudo apt-get install mesa-utils[/bash]

[bash]sudo mkdir /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/[/bash]

[bash]echo -e ‚Section „Device“n Identifier „Intel Graphics“n Driver „Intel“n Option „AccelMethod“ „sna“n Option „TearFree“ „true“nEndSection‘ | sudo tee /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf[/bash]

  1. This may go wrong (as it went for me) on a system that uses Unity instead of Gnome. Depending on your configuration, the suggested commands may even lead to a system that won’t boot anymore.

    In that case, just select one of the boot options called “failsafe mode” from GRUB’s “Advanced Options for Ubuntu” at startup, boot into failsafe graphics mode, open a command line, and rename /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d by running these commands:

    $ sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d.alt
    $ reboot

    After reboot, everything should be fine again. (Of course, the video tearing will still be there.)
